Look at these adorable creatures! Is it any wonder why we celebrate them with their own holidays? It's time to continue our stroll down Pet Lane and to see just what is up for the rest of May with our furry ones.
Like Chihuahua's weren't spoiled enough, there's now a HOLIDAY for them.
May 14th is National Chihuahua Appreciation Day. Um, I'd say to go spoil your dog rotten on this day, but if you're a Chihuahua guardian you're already thoroughly up his butt.
This holiday has a story behind it. As Megan Swinney on www.wideopenpets.com says, Nadia Alterio created the day in honor of her precious Teaka, her beloved Chihuahua.
Moving along to the next celebration...And it's May 20th! National Rescue Dog Day! It was created by Lisa Wiehebrink of Tails That Teach. Rather than blathering on about the details, I'd encourage you to check out their site in the references.
Millions of dogs enter animal shelters every year. And we know how that story usually ends...It's a horrific truth about our country. We just don't have a system to save all the dogs who need forever homes.
So put on an old shirt (you're about to be covered in love-fur) and go ADOPT A RESCUE ANIMAL. It's time you got a best friend.
So what's next?! Invite Your Pet's In-Laws Over Day? How to Measure Your Pet's Tail Accurately Day? Nope! It's World Turtle Day - May 23rd! The reptiles, in my opinion, should be left in the wild with their freedom, but are often kept as a pet since they're slow, quiet, and cuter than a fuzzy kitten.
Well maybe not. But they grow on you.
Created by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson, who founded the American Tortoise Rescue -- a nonprofit that exists for all things turtle -- they advocate for the humane treatment of turtles. Way to go, guys! Keep meandering towards that finish line!
And we've made it to the last pet holiday celebrated in May...
The 30th -- International Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Day. A mouthful. There are lots of breed-specific pet celebration days and as you'd imagine, guardians of King Cavaliers are wrapped around the little paw of their chosen breed.
Being completely honest, I couldn't uncover who's responsible for this holiday and that's okay...It definitely exists. But facts I gathered throughout the research of this blog often weren't consistent, weird pages popped up about the subject which confused things, and a huge amount of time was freely given to sniff everything out. I didn't even feel comfortable enough to share a reference.
But I'm not bitter. Enjoy your Cavs!
